Chambers
Recently, i found Chambers.
:D that's short for Chamber Hutz, a quaint little shop near Boat Quay. Along the street are numerous similar little KTV bars for the Shenton Way crowd to fill their nights with drinks and laughter, not to mention for the insurance, real estate, car agents to expand their clientele.
I went to a couple of these bars, some of them high end and pricey, some less exorbitant with their deco and slightly cheaper. None of them left enough impression on me to return.
The first time i stepped into Chambers, i was lured in by the fact that it was starkly empty. As I'm keen not on the drink nor the crowd, but on the singing, the lesser, the better. After a couple of songs, i noticed nobody showed any enthusiasm in the singing which is a contrast to the almost standing ovation i receive in the other pubs. Oh yes, it is still empty. and oh yes, the boss is quietly counting his stocks and doing his accounting. That's Gary for u. 100% decent. No flattery, no feigned friendliness, just.. him.
over the past months, it has become a habit. Afterwork, head down to Chambers, sing a couple, order dinner in, sing another couple. Head home. The only downside is that both Gary and Zhiwei refuse to charge me for Green Tea, making me the lurker instead of the customer. So, if anybody is in for a beer and have an evening to spare (i seldom lurk beyond 10pm, don't worry), do join me at Chambers and give them some business.
i used to wonder at how the FRIENDS gang can spend so much time at the coffee place, but now i know. I've made a couple of good friends at Chambers so far, all very good singers, and it is always a great thing to know that no matter how hard the boss scolds, i can always count on Gary and Zhiwei to smile brightly when i see them. Of course, i'll never forget that day when i had a particularly nasty fight with an old friend and all i could think of was to head to Chambers and find some support and got it... more that i had hoped for.
